The Memory Police by Yoko Ogawa
The Memory Police by Yoko Ogawa
From the very first page, you already feel the eeriness and along with that the desire to move along so that you will know more. In the book, the characters exist in a place where things disappear as in one day a random thing vanishes and all other forms of that thing must then be destroyed. That premise alone is very bothersome especially since the main character is a writer. When you lose things and the memories of it, that poses a huge problem with storytelling. We were so engrossed most of the time but we felt like the ending was anti-climactic and yet we still recommend it because it’s rare to find a book that’s beautifully haunting.
