Hermès in the Making Special Exhibition

Hermès in the Making Special Exhibition

While in Singapore for Formula One, we were so lucky to have also been able to go to the Hermès in the Making exhibit held at the Bayfront Avenue of the Marina Bay Sands Event Plaza. The promise in the press release articles said that we were going to be able to meet the artisans behind the brand’s sustainable craftsmanship. It sounded so exciting but we didn’t realize how much more amazing it would be once you are inside the colorful structure that was built specifically for this ten-day occasion.

We made sure to visit each station and listen to each artisan. We participated in all the interactive activities and devoured all information as each new knowledge inspired us to create and re-discover our own passion, whatever they may be. We were mesmerized by the laser-focus attention paid by the artisan in the stone-setting station and the porcelain painting station. We marveled at the many steps that it actually took to make high quality gloves and at discovering how saddles are made. We enjoyed our time at the watch station. Of course, we also visited the “Kelly” station even though it was a bit crowded as most ladies were only interested to hear about how their dream bag is made. Our favorite though was the “scarf” station. The artisan, whose fit and look we really fancied, and her interpreter were both excellent at explaining and were very patient with answering all questions even if we lingered much longer than we should. We now understand more than ever why those scarves are so rightfully expensive.

You don’t need to own any Hermès product to appreciate this exhibit. You just need to be a believer in the value of craftsmanship and the constantly evolving treasure trove of artisanal skills.
