Story of Trees
Su Bok Kim
Opening Reception: March 1, 2016
Exhibition Duration: March 1 - 15, 2016
At the ArtistSpace, February caps with Story of Trees, the solo exhibition of South Korean visual artist Su Bok Kim. This exhibit is her anthropomorphic and abstract impressionist take on nature, her chosen subject matter.
Composed of images of forest foliage rendered in vibrant and sometimes somber hues, the exhibition transports viewers to the heart of the woodlands where the trees think, feel and act like people through the changing seasons. Each image in the exhibition portrays trees like individuals who come from different walks of life – young callow shrubs, trees in their zestful prime, bald yet resilient hardwoods frozen in the winter.
Su Bok Kim’s representation of these vibrant life forms is markedly and refreshingly Korean in approach, a style that immediately stands out among those of today’s contemporary abstract painters. Motivated by nature, which she believes is composed of heterogeneous parts, she has developed a special abstract impressionist technique characterized by a “habitual and progressive” layering of brushstrokes that mirrors her subject matter.
Through this style, not only is she able to create vivid and texturized images of forests through the repetition and overlapping of lines and planes, but also, she is able to present the “brushstroke” as a powerful building block;
an element with its own entity.
